This is what happens when Spoon and the Keepon get stuck in your head for days and you just have to let them out.

RESONANT STIRLING ENGINE GENERATOR RESONANT STIRLING ENGINE GENERATOR
Posted by: mowerofdoom

Video duration: 166 seconds

Developed from a previous engine, this one is now producing some electrical energy.
Unfortunately, about 30 seconds after filming this the glass cold side exploded, the hot end fell off and melted a hole in my desk. Ooops.
Time to move on to version III!

TRANSPARENT Stirling Engine (Laminar Flow) TRANSPARENT Stirling Engine (Laminar Flow)

Video duration: 102 seconds

This engine is made from glass bits that I had knocking about the workshop which just happened to fit together very nicely!
The piston is a 'sawn-off' test tube and the cylinder body and heating chamber are made from some odd looking 'blood' tubes (if anyone knows what these are supposed to be for I would love to know).

Laminar Flow Stirling Engine V1.1 Laminar Flow Stirling Engine V1.1

Video duration: 106 seconds

This engine was prototyped and published previously on Youtube.
The steel wool regenerator has been replaced with stainless steel and flywheel has been replaced.
Cooling fins have increased in size and the epoxy piston has been replaced with aluminium.
The connecting rod at the piston end now has a roller bearings instead of a bush to further reduce friction.

Video duration: 78 seconds

This is just a test engine to establish what configurations run best.
A morning to build and a day of adjustments to flywheel, choke, regenerator to get going.
It seems to take off and race now and again, but decelerates quickly after about 10 seconds (I think the cold end gets too hot and needs fins).
It nearly went in the bin on more than one occasion.

This is a large paraffin blowtorch I purchased some time ago at a steam fair.
Always fun to get going and sometimes slightly scary!

This engine will run for around 40 minutes on a mug of boiling water.
Spec:
* Expanded polystyrene displacer - 1/8" air gap
* 'Nylatron' power piston (rubbed with graphite)
* Standard PB bush forms power piston cylinder
* Aluminium hot and cold ends
* 3" bore polypropylene insulator

Interesting LTD stirling engine prototype VERSION II Interesting LTD stirling engine prototype VERSION II
Posted by: mowerofdoom

Video duration: 22 seconds

This is the MkII with an epoxy piston. The displacer movement is still achieved magnetically and the leakage problem is sorted.
Hoping to make a MkIII which uses a displacer driven both upwards and downwards magnetically. (The speed of this one is limited because gravity is used to move the displacer downwards).
Suggestions welcome!

Video duration: 72 seconds

This engine was designed on the back of a fag packet and rustled up in an afternoon. The results are not surprising....
It works - but only just.

LTD Stirling II LTD Stirling II
Posted by: mowerofdoom

Video duration: 28 seconds

Same as a previous video but now with slightly less frictional losses - so running faster.
Changes to the next one will include a shorter displacer rod to reduce side loading on the gland and a graphite piston (this one's nylon and gets 'sticky' when hot).
Any suggestions for improvements would be appreciated.

Simple DIY Solar Tracker Simple DIY Solar Tracker
Posted by: mowerofdoom

Video duration: 19 seconds

This tracker is lashed up from two solar cells salvaged from solar garden lights and a maxon geared motor.
That's it. No frills.
Accuracy is around +/- 10 degrees.
If anyone thinks of a way I can get it to very simply auto-reset at the beginning of each day, I would love to hear about it!
